CITY Of CREATIONS
The cinema
At the end of the XIXth century, industrialists of Lyon, the "Frères Lumière", are going to play a role of first plan in the history of the cinema with, in 1895 one of the first accomplished films, "The Arrival of a train in railway station of La Ciotat", followed by some others that have been accomplished in their house of La Ciotat, Le Château du Clos des Plages : "the watered Sprinkler", "Baby's Meal". Les Frères Lumière also accomplish the first photographs in colour in the gulf of La Ciotat.
In La Ciotat is also the oldest still existent cinema of the world, "L'Eden", facing the new harbour of the city. Its rehabilitation via a committee of support chaired by Bertrand Tavernier is under way, and the cinema should reopen shortly, as well as a museum Lumière-Michel Simon (the actor having finished its days in Ciotat). La Ciotat is one of the essential cities of the beginning of the cinema.
The pétanque
Ciotat also demands the creation of the pétanque : in 1910, in the ground of Provençal game of the brothers Pitiot, the chairs of the audience had been taken away. But a friend of the owners, Jules Lenoir, who was crippled of rheumatisms and found it difficult to stay standing, was authorized to play sat in a fixed post, " feet tanqués " in the middle of a circle drawn on the ground.

" It was once 1720" a historical celebration which recalls the terrible period of the Pest of Marseilles which hit Provence in XVIIIth century.
The show, which took place for the first time in 2002, is the work of a non-profitmaking organization: " La Ciotat, it was once ", of volunteers, from the city or besides, who work all the year long to prepare this weekend of historical reconstitution.

PLACE OF HOLIDAYS
In XIXth and XXth centuries, the city is known as place of holiday. Lamartine, Stendhal stoped there, George Braque and Othon Friesz paint there several pictures, one is "La Calanque", grey time on the site of Figuerolles. The painter André Masson stays there in 1930s, the sculptor Baltasar Lobo around 1945.
Since, the city kept its power of attraction for summer tourism and offers numerous beaches, numerous possibilities of diving, as well as a starting point for visiting the Calanques.
